Recovering from surgery

The following points should be kept in mind to ensure that your recovery from surgery goes as smoothly as possible:

  • When preparing for discharge from the hospital, ask any questions you may have in regard to your follow up appointments, dressings and any medication you may need.
  • If you live alone, try and arrange for a friend or family member to stay with you for at least the first 24 hours after your procedure.
  • If you smoke, you should stop or cut down to reduce your surgery risks and improve your recovery.
  • Take your discharge (usually pain relief) medication as directed. Begin taking your pain relief medication as soon as you start to feel uncomfortable. If you wait to take your pain medication until the pain is severe, you will have more difficulty controlling the pain.
  • After your surgery, wait until you are hungry before trying to eat. Begin with a light meal and try to avoid greasy food for the first 24 hours.

Kylie, our Practice Nurse, is also always available if you have any questions or concerns after your operation. An information pack will also be provided, containing all the information you need to know after your operation.
