Diagnostic Laparoscopy

What is it?

Diagnostic laparoscopy.

Diagnostic laparoscopy is a procedure that allows your surgeon to look directly at the contents of your abdomen or pelvis, including the fallopian tubes, ovaries, uterus, small bowel, large bowel, appendix, liver and gallbladder. This examination helps identify the cause of your pain in this region.

How is it done?

Laparoscopy is performed whilst you are under a general anaesthetic. A small incision is made near your belly button. The laparoscope is inserted through this incision and the abdomen inflated to make the organs easier to see. The laparoscope may also be equipped with surgical devices for taking tissue samples or dividing scar tissue.

A second incision at the pubic hairline may also be necessary. This site provides an additional opening for instruments needed for completing minor surgical procedures.

Post-operation information

There are a number of things to be mindful of when recovering from surgery:

  • Gas in the abdomen may cause some shoulder tip and chest discomfort. This should subside within the first 24 to 48 hours after surgery.
  • Do not drink alcohol or drive for the first 24 hours after surgery.
  • You can shower as your dressings are waterproof.
  • Remove the plastic waterproof dressing three days after surgery, leaving the Steri-strips in place.
  • You can return to work 3-5 days after surgery.
  • Contact the surgery if you experience any increased pain, redness, heat, swelling, excessive bleeding or discharge from incision sites. Also if you experience persistent nausea and vomiting for greater than 24 hours.
