Haemorrhoids

What is it?

Internal and external haemorrhoids.

Haemorrhoids are enlarged blood vessels around the anus that can cause bleeding, itchiness and pain.

There are two types of haemorrhoids: internal and external. Internal haemorrhoids are inside the back passage where the rectum meets the anus. They are the enlargements of the normal cushions of blood vessels. They may be aggravated by straining and constipation. When enlarged they may come down through the back passage in a process known as prolapse.

External haemorrhoids are on the outside of the back passage and are covered by skin. These are enlarged due to the stretching of the anal skin, as may occur during childbirth or straining.

How is it treated?

Rubberband ligation.

Rubber band ligation is the most effective treatment for large internal haemorrhoids that bleed and prolapse. It involves grasping and holding the haemorrhoid with a special instrument (or using a suction device) and simultaneously placing a rubber band around the base of the haemorrhoids.

This treatment can be performed in the surgeon's rooms without local anaesthetic, using a tube and light (anoscope) to see inside the anus.

Post-operation information

  • Bleeding may occur after the procedure and in 5-10 days when the haemorrhoid drops off. This procedure may need to be repeated several weeks later if bleeding and prolapse persist.
  • You will be given pain killers called Digesic after leaving hospital which can cause drowsiness. This must be taken regularly for the first 5-7 days.
  • A laxative will be recommended to you, it is important that your stool remain soft. Use for at least two weeks.
  • If your operation was a haemorrhoidectomy, you will be given an oral antibiotic called Metronidazole (Flagyl) to help decrease pain and reduce the risk of developing an infection. Ensure you complete this course of antibiotics.
  • Salt baths should be taken twice daily, for the first fortnight. Apply Rectinol cream after your bath (twice daily).
  • It is normal for these procedures to cause pain and discomfort. The discomfort can last as long as six weeks.
